Yinka Shonibare was born in London in 1962 and grew up in the UK and Nigeria. His work focuses on cultural fusion and the construction of identity-using film, painting and installation he creates enlightening social and cultural commentary. He is an internationally recognised artist who has exhibited in leading museums worldwide and participated in seminal exhibitions such as: Sensation, Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997); 49th Venice Biennial, Venice, Italy (2001); Documenta11, Kassel, Germany (2002) and Africa Remix, Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf, touring to Centre George Pompidou, Paris, the Hayward Gallery, London, the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2005-06). He was made a fellow of Goldsmiths College (FGC), London in 2003, a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2005, joined Iniva's Board of Trustees in 2009 and received an Honorary Doctorate from the Royal College of Art, London in 2010. Shonibare was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2004, for the Citibank Photography Prize in 1999 and was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Visual Artists in 1998. His works are held by major institutional collections including Tate, London, Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and many others. Shonibare lives and works in London.
